PBT is the harder, more heat-resistant of the two plastics keycaps are moulded from. It stays matte instead of developing the greasy shine ABS picks up after a year or two, tolerates the heat that dye-sublimation needs, and sounds slightly deeper and drier under the finger.
Sixty-two of the seventy-one keycap sets we track are PBT, which sounds like PBT has won. Read the brand column before you conclude that: thirty-nine of those sixty-two are Lofree, and Lofree's sets are cut for its own low-profile boards. If you are shopping for a standard MX keyboard, the real shelf here is twenty-three sets, not sixty-two.

The Lofree problem, stated plainly
Lofree ships three in-house profiles — Touch (28 sets), Flow (8) and Edge (3). Touch is a 17.5 mm sculpted profile for Lofree's full-height boards; Flow at 6.3 mm and Edge at 5 mm are low-profile and will not fit a standard MX switch at all. They are beautiful sets, many of them among the most interesting designs on the site, and they are useless on a Keychron Q1.
So filter before you browse. The PBT sets that fit a normal hot-swap board are the thirteen in Cherry profile, the seven in OEM, and three one-off profiles (KAT, MOA, XDA). Everything else on this page is a Lofree accessory in disguise.
What PBT actually buys you
Two things, and one of them is oversold.
The real one is wear. ABS legends and surfaces polish to a shine under the fingers you use most, so a two-year-old ABS set has visibly glossy WASD and spacebar. PBT resists it. On a board you type on daily, that is the difference between a set that ages and one that does not.
The oversold one is sound. PBT is described everywhere as "thockier". It is a smaller effect than the internet suggests, and it is swamped by the case, the plate, the mounting style and whether the board has foam. If you want a deeper sound, changing the mounting style will do far more than changing the plastic.
Thickness is the spec that would settle it, and we have a measured figure for only six of the sixty-two sets — 1.50 to 1.80 mm, median 1.55. Thicker caps do sound fuller, but published thickness is rare enough across this market that it is not a reliable filter.
Legends and backlight
Fifty-one of the sixty-two are dye-sub and nine are doubleshot. That skew has a consequence people discover after buying: only ten of the sixty-two PBT sets are shine-through. Dye-sublimation puts colour into the plastic, and opaque plastic blocks light. If your board's RGB is a feature rather than an accident, start from the doubleshot page instead of here.
