OEM Profile keycaps

OEM profile keycaps: medium-height (~11.9mm), sculpted, slight cylindrical top. The default profile for most pre-built mechanical keyboards.

9 keycaps · $20–$35

OEM is the profile almost every pre-built keyboard ships with, which makes it the profile most people are replacing rather than the one they are seeking. It is about 2 mm taller than Cherry with a more upright front row, and the sculpt is gentler — rows differ in angle more than in dish depth.

Nine sets here, from Glorious (four), Wooting (three), Royal Kludge and Keychron. Small as that shelf is, it has the clearest identity of any keycap page on the site: eight of the nine are shine-through, and seven of the nine are doubleshot. If your board has RGB and you want to read the legends at night, this page is the answer and the dye-sub page is not.

The backlight is the whole point

Doubleshot moulds the legend as a separate piece of plastic rather than printing it on top, so a translucent legend in an opaque cap lets light through a shape that can never wear off. That is why the two properties travel together here: seven doubleshot sets, eight shine-through sets, nine sets total.

Compare the numbers elsewhere. Across the fifty-one dye-sub sets we track, exactly one is shine-through — dye sits in the plastic and blocks light by construction. On the Cherry profile page it is five of seventeen. OEM is where the backlit sets live, and that is a function of what the profile is for: replacing the caps on a gaming board without changing how it feels.

Sizes, and one outlier

Kit sizes run 104 to 219 keys. The 104-key Glorious Aura Mechanical set is a full-size kit with no spares — fine for a 104-key board, tight for anything with a non-standard bottom row. Most of the shelf sits around 123–141 keys, which covers a full-size layout plus alternates.

The outlier is Keychron OEM Double-Shot at 219 keys. That is not a bigger keyboard; it is a multi-layout mega-kit carrying Mac and Windows modifier sets, several bottom rows, and spares. It is also the one set on this page that is neither shine-through nor doubleshot-legended, despite the name — the legends are dye-sublimated.

Material split

Seven of the nine are PBT and two are ABS. PBT resists the greasy shine that develops on ABS over a year or two of use, and sounds slightly deeper. The two ABS sets — Glorious ABS Doubleshot V2 and Wooting Etched Backlit — are both backlit-first designs, where the thinner, more transparent-friendly plastic is doing a job. See the ABS page for what that trade actually costs.

Frequently asked

Will OEM caps fit my keyboard?
If the switches are MX-compatible, yes — stem-wise. Check the bottom row before you buy: these sets assume a 6.25u spacebar and standard 1.25u modifiers, and none of them carries an Alice or split-spacebar kit.
Is OEM worse than Cherry?
No, just taller. The complaint people repeat — that OEM is the "stock" profile and therefore the boring one — is about how it arrives, not how it types. If you already like the caps on your pre-built and only want better plastic or working RGB, staying on OEM is the change with the fewest surprises.
