About keycap sets

Keycaps are the interchangeable covers on each switch. The two things that matter most are profile (the 3D shape) and material (PBT or ABS plastic). Profile determines height and sculpt; material determines sound, feel, and how quickly they shine from finger oils.

Standard MX-stem keycaps fit the vast majority of mechanical switches. Choc (low-profile) and Topre sets are separate ecosystems. We also track layout compatibility (ANSI vs ISO vs JIS) because a US-ANSI set won't cleanly cover an ISO keyboard's stepped-caps-lock and tall return key.

For beginners: PBT Cherry-profile in ANSI covers ~90% of setups and resists shine. Doubleshot legends outlast dye-sub or pad-print for years of daily use.

Frequently asked

PBT or ABS — which is better?
PBT is more durable, has a drier/textured feel, and doesn't shine from finger oils as quickly. ABS is smoother, legends can be sharper via doubleshot molding, but shines over time. Both are fine; PBT is the safer default.
What's the most comfortable profile?
Cherry profile (medium-height, sculpted rows) is the modern default for typing comfort. OEM is taller and common on pre-builts. SA is tall and rounded — divisive. DSA/XDA are flat uniform profiles, good for ortho and niche layouts.
Will any keycap set fit my keyboard?
Check stem compatibility (MX is the standard) and your physical layout (ANSI vs ISO, standard vs split-spacebar, stepped caps-lock, 1-u vs 1.5-u modifiers). Bottom-row compatibility is the most common gotcha — 6.25u spacebar and 1.25u modifiers are standard, but many sets ship extras.
What does doubleshot mean?
Doubleshot legends are molded from two plastics, not printed on top. They never fade. Dye-sublimation prints dye into the plastic and is nearly as durable on PBT. Pad-printed legends wear off fastest.
