Screw-in stabilizers

Screw-in PCB-mount stabilizers — Durock V3, Staebies V2, C³ Equalz, TX AP. The premium choice for custom builds: stable, lubed, no rattle.

14 stabilizers · $10–$20

Screw-in stabilizers fasten to the PCB with two small screws per unit. They sit flush against the board, do not work loose, and give the cleanest sound of the three mounting types — which is why they are 14 of the 22 stabilizer sets we track, from 10 brands.

They also take the longest to install and require a PCB with threaded stabilizer holes. Check that before ordering.

Buy them dry and lube them yourself

The single most useful number on this page: not one of the 14 screw-in sets we track ships pre-lubed. Across all three mounting types it is one set out of 22.

This is the opposite of what happened to switches, where 80% now arrive factory-lubed and hand-lubing has become optional. Stabilizers went the other way, and for a defensible reason — the amount and placement of lubricant on a stabilizer is a matter of taste and of the specific board, and a factory cannot guess it. So the job is yours.

Treat it as part of the purchase, not an upgrade. An unlubed stabilizer under a spacebar rattles, and it will be the loudest thing on an otherwise good keyboard. Budget an hour and a tub of dielectric grease. Stabilizers 101 walks through the band-aid and holee mods as well.

What varies between sets

Price runs $3 to $29 across the category — nearly a tenfold spread on a part most people never think about. The cheap end works; the expensive end has tighter tolerances, which means less wire play and less work to tune. If you are already spending an hour lubing, the tighter set is worth the difference.

Housing material is nylon, POM or polycarbonate. POM is the slipperiest and the most forgiving of a light lube job. Nylon is the most common and the most neutral.

Wire quality is what actually separates a good set from a bad one, and nobody publishes a spec for it. A bent or poorly formed wire ticks no matter how much grease you apply. This is where brand reputation earns its keep.

Frequently asked

Do screw-in stabilizers come lubed?
None of the ones we track do. Assume you will lube them yourself; it is normal, not a defect, and it is the difference between a keyboard that sounds good and one that rattles.
Are screw-in stabilizers better than clip-in?
Mechanically, yes — they sit flush and cannot work loose, which removes a whole class of rattle. The cost is installation time and a PCB that supports them. See [clip-in](/stabilizers/clip-in) and [plate-mount](/stabilizers/plate-mount) for the alternatives.
Will screw-in stabilizers fit my keyboard?
Only if the PCB has threaded holes for them. Plenty of boards, especially cheaper prebuilts, are plate-mount only. Check the product page for your keyboard first.
How much should I spend?
Anywhere in the range works once lubed. If you want to spend less time tuning, the upper half of the range generally has less wire play out of the box.
